A blend of 50% Mourvedre, 25% Syrah, and 25% Petite Sirah, the 2005 Claire’s offers plum, fig, and black cherry characteristics as well as more heady alcohol and ripeness, but not the freshness and balance of the 2004. It is a mouthfilling, substantial wine to enjoy over the next 2-3 years. If you haven’t discovered these southwestern wines, they are well-worth a search of the marketplace. I have long been impressed with Callaghan Vineyards’ offerings, which emerge from an Arizona mesa. Sometimes the wines, especially those made from Bordeaux varietals, can be slightly overripe and loosely structured, but Callaghan never cheats on flavor.
