2004 Callaghan Claire’s
Rating: 90
Drink: 2007 – 2011
Source: Robert Parker, Wine Advocate August, 2007
The outstanding 2004 Claire’s (39% Mourvedre, 35% Syrah, and 26% Petite Sirah) is a knock-out example of what can be achieved in Arizona. Elegant notes of red cherries, blueberries, black currants, wood smoke, and herbs emerge from this medium to full-bodied effort. Fresh acidity and lofty alcohol are found in this vibrant, well-made, realistically priced red. Drink it over the next 3-4 years. If you haven’t discovered these southwestern wines, they are well-worth a search of the marketplace. I have long been impressed with Callaghan Vineyards’ offerings, which emerge from an Arizona mesa. Sometimes the wines, especially those made from Bordeaux varietals, can be slightly overripe and loosely structured, but Callaghan never cheats on flavor. |
