The straightforward, Cotes du Rhone-like 2004 Back Lot is a blend of 62% Mourvedre and 38% Syrah. It exhibits an evolved, medium ruby/plum/garnet color as well as notes of tar, herbs, plums, and overripe cherries. Consume it over the next few years. If you haven’t discovered these southwestern wines, they are well-worth a search of the marketplace. I have long been impressed with Callaghan Vineyards’ offerings, which emerge from an Arizona mesa. Sometimes the wines, especially those made from Bordeaux varietals, can be slightly overripe and loosely structured, but Callaghan never cheats on flavor.
